Modern Dog provided a unique opportunity both in terms of the client’s willingness to let me work without restriction and the market into which they’re entering. The other sites in similar markets are almost universally terrible from aesthetic and user interaction perspectives. I figured with enough effort we could create a site that stood out in it’s market and (almost exclusively due to the market) my portfolio.

Often you see a webpage described as a “three-legged stool”, I prefer four-legged stools so from the normal trifecta of content, style and behavior I wanted to extract out of the style layer a layout layer. The freedom offered by the client made this the perfect chance to try to extract a layout layer and see if it offered any benefit. Other than this experimental extraction it was a pretty typical development process.

I feel like both of the goals for this project were achieved; a not terrible site in the “dogwear” market and something that stands out from the other sites in my portfolio. The client was elated with the outcome which is just about all the assurance I need to know we’ve headed down the right path.
